  • Carwash Melody's Enchanting Oddity

    5 out of 5 stars
    Ehicegipijuxex23 September 2024United Kingdom🇬🇧

What kind of accident could happen in a carwash that would lead to someone's demise? How does such an unusual event spark the creation of a unique melody? This tune slinks out from the darkness, initially fooling you into believing it's wandering without purpose, then suddenly picks up speed, thanks to Bill Frisell's distinctive touch and Lyle Mays' undeniable ability to elevate the entire piece to its climax. The most unexpectedly poignant outro follows, leaving you wondering what story was being told, and why its enchantment and power are tied to a carwash of all things—it's just plain odd. "Often in the Open" is a tad less peculiar and, consequently, slightly less captivating: its uneven, straight melody carries the most raw and free-form improvisational moments of the entire album. In contrast, both the opener and closer are more polished: "Maurizius" is all about delicate, ethereal soloing (something Mays excelled at, which is why he takes center stage) interwoven with overly romantic passages, while there isn't a single improvised note in the title track (not ONE) that isn't Eberhard's. A gentle reminder of who was the mastermind behind this quiet powerhouse of an album all along. Himself playing first over strangely vast open spaces, then alongside piano riffs that make me grin and think, "yes, this is the last music track I'd like to hear before I die / after everything is over." Beautiful stuff. Whatever transpired later that night, as strange and emotional as it was, it was undoubtedly worth experiencing.
