I stumbled upon this in quite a rough shape and grabbed it for a steal, but it turned out to be a real gem after some cleaning. The sound quality is absolutely stunning. It's a pure joy to listen to, with a gorgeous, warm, dynamic sound that really pulls you in. The vinyl is perfectly flat and silent, a fantastic pressing. And the music? It's incredible. Give it a few spins to let it grow on you, and you'll see what I mean. I can't stop playing it over and over.
I stumbled upon this gem at a second-hand record store in Pacific Grove, Ca, with no prior knowledge or anticipation, but after giving it a few spins, it's now one of my most cherished albums; an amazing journey through themes, tunes, and composition.
This album is an absolute must-listen, I assure you! Back in 1979, I received it as a Christmas present. I had mentioned to my girlfriend that I enjoyed "Send One Your Love," which was playing on the radio, so she surprised me with this album. Before this, I was only familiar with Stevie's hits from "Songs in the Key of Life," so I approached it without any expectations. To my delight, the music was incredibly diverse, and I found myself genuinely loving it! With each listen, my appreciation grew, and it has since become one of my all-time favorites. I was utterly shocked to later discover that this album was critically panned upon its release. At 19, I didn't pay much attention to music critics, so I was blissfully unaware. If you approach this record with an open mind and a love for creative freedom, I'm confident you'll adore it as much as I do! A huge thanks to Cathy, wherever she may be, for this incredible gift that has brought me joy for 45 years!
This is an amazing sounding LP, truly one of Stevie Wonder's finest albums. I'd rank it as his 4th best, following Songs in the Key of Life, Innervisions, and Talking Book. This pressing is unique, using an analogue master safety tape instead of the primary digital master (as this album was among the first recorded digitally). Germany lacked the infrastructure to use digital recording masters for manufacturing records at the time, so we ended up with this higher fidelity, more vibrant pressing compared to the original USA version that uses the main digital master. While the original USA pressing still sounds great, this German one truly brings the sound to life, especially on the synth-heavy instrumental tracks. The stereo image feels wider and more immersive, as if the music is stepping out of the speakers into the room. It sounds incredible on tracks like Send One Your Love and Ecclesiastes. The trifold sleeve is very nice, embossed, and still carries a hint of the perfume Stevie requested to be sprayed on the records during manufacturing. Overall, I highly recommend this LP to anyone who loves ambitious, fantastic-sounding double albums and late 70's synth-heavy soundtracks.
