Incredible! This version is an absolute joy to listen to, beginning to end. Every musician featured here is at their best. The work done by Kevin Gray on the mastering is exceptional - the sound is perfectly balanced and crystal clear. Don't miss out, grab this one now!
The soundstage is expansive and deep, offering excellent layering and a smooth, cohesive flow throughout the entire album. Chet Baker's horn shines brilliantly, delivering a lively presence that's clear and bright, yet never harsh. The drums are notably captivating on numerous tracks, providing a dynamic push and rich texture that enhances the album's overall atmosphere. The pressing is incredibly quiet—absolutely no disturbances, ticks, or skips—which allows the dynamics and ambiance to come through crisply. It's a well-rounded, enjoyable listen and a highly recommended addition to your collection.
This is the one, folks! For just $25, it's an absolute bargain – grab it now or regret it later. There's a Chet Baker set out there priced at $500, which includes four of these releases (It Could Happen To You, New York, Chet, Lerner and Loewe). But why pay $500 when you can get each album for $25 ($100 total)? Would you really spend $400 extra for just six Outtakes and Alternates and a photo? (I think not.) So, if you're even slightly interested in Chet Baker on vinyl, go ahead and invest in these four albums. They're an amazing deal – the music is fantastic, the pressing is flawless (a thick, flat disc with no noise), and the jacket is top-notch (thick, premium printing, and even has the right sleeve like the MOFI). Snag these four albums as soon as you can. In my opinion, they even surpass the Blue Note Classic Series (80th) and are just a step below the Tone Poets. Make sure you get the Craft Recordings Kevin Grey cuts, not those inferior [Original Jazz Classics] white labels. They're almost the same price but vastly different in quality. I've always been a fan of Chet Baker's vocals – he's my favorite – but I must admit, I underestimated his skills as a trumpet player. He faced some serious competition (Armstrong, Dizzy, Miles, Morgan, Farmer, Hubbard, Brown, etc.), and I'll admit I was drawn to the more powerful, virtuoso sound. But now, I have a whole new respect for Chet as a trumpet player and group leader. He's truly a joy to listen to. I know I'll cherish these records for years to come. So please, if you're in the know, invest. And if you're new to this, it's a great place to start – Chet will help you appreciate real Jazz.
Excellent recording with clear separation and space between the musicians. However, the non-fill side B tracks 1 and 2 let this great recording down. Hoping for better luck next time. The second copy is full of loud ticks on both sides. No improvement from the first copy.
The quality is truly excellent. It's as flat as a pancake, with a thick cardboard sleeve that has top-notch printing. The soundstage is impressive, and there's hardly any surface noise. The drums and bass sound fantastic. The only downside, in my opinion, is the cymbals, which sound a tad unnatural, but perhaps that's also in the original mix. I don't have an old copy to compare it to.
