The sound quality on this album is absolutely fantastic! Plus, I'm really digging the cover art.
Featuring one of the most androgynous and stunning women gracing the Roxy Music covers, model Amanda Cazalet certainly leads the way for this impressive compilation of live tracks. There's plenty to gush over, though one might also acknowledge the artists from a few years before who shaped Roxy Music's sound, who were notably absent from this performance. Setting aside the exhilarating Roxy material for a moment, for me, it was the haunting “Like A Hurricane” by Neil Young and the John Lennon classic “Jealous Guy” that truly elevated this album, adding a touch of the unexpected and making me ponder other songs Roxy Music could have brilliantly covered, with “Sweet Child O’ Mine” by Guns N’ Roses at the top of that list. Recorded in 1982 but officially released in 1990 on compact disc, some might argue that the live recording of Viva is a more refined and captivating production, though I believe that was simply a product of the earlier era and the band members involved. On Heart Still Beating, that absence is noticeable if you listen closely, but overall, guitarist Phil Manzanera plays with a remarkable effortlessness, sounding both inspired and visionary, with solos that are nothing short of excellent, perfectly complementing Bryan Ferry’s vocals with a restrained passion and grace. Considering that Avalon was released just before this show, an album that gently draws listeners in, it's no surprise that Roxy Music guides us along a similar sonic journey here, allowing this concert to unfold with a sense of elegance and charm rather than the edgy quirkiness they were known for, where the adventure lies in the sophistication and mystique of each note. In this light, I found the performance to be an embodiment of all things lush and dark, with well-known tracks delivered in a reflective atmosphere, where the houselights were unnecessary, and the band seemed to play for each other, with the audience as an afterthought. There aren't many live albums I can fully immerse myself in, but Heart Still Beating fits me perfectly with its understated nature, an album made even richer and smoother on vinyl.
