  • Groovy Tunes, Great Sound

    5 out of 5 stars
    TyTabeu6 May 2024United States🇺🇸

Sloppy and oily performance featuring George Freeman and O'Donel Levy on guitars, with Bernard Purdie handling the drums and Kwasi Jayourba on congas. McGriff and Holmes really steal the show, not leaving much space for Levy or Freeman to shine. A lively collection of groovy tunes, with 'Finger Lickin' Good' standing out as a highlight. I initially listened to the Quintessence reissue of this album, but it can't hold a candle to the Groove Merchant version—it's as if a layer of fog was lifted from the original recording. My copy plays beautifully, clean and crisp with barely any surface noise to speak of.

  • Groovy Tunes, McGriff Shines

Sloppy and oily performance featuring George Freeman and O'Donel Levy on guitars, Bernard Purdie handling the drums, and Kwasi Jayourba on congas. McGriff and Holmes really steal the show, barely giving Levy or Freeman a chance to shine. It's a lively collection of groovy tunes, with "Finger Lickin' Good" being the standout track. I initially listened to the Quintessence reissue of this album, but it's nowhere near as good as the Groove Merchant version—it's like someone took off a layer of padding from the original recording. My copy sounds fantastic, playing smoothly with hardly any noticeable surface noise.

  • Funky Jams Shine Bright

    5 out of 5 stars
    SqKadia6 May 2024United States🇺🇸

George Freeman and O'Donel Levy on guitars, Bernard Purdie on drums, and Kwasi Jayourba on congas create a loose and greasy sound. McGriff and Holmes shine bright, pushing Levy and Freeman into the background. It's a blast listening to these funky jams, with "Finger Lickin' Good" standing out. I initially heard the Quintessence reissue of this album, but the Groove Merchant pressing blows it away—it's like someone took off a layer of muffling from the recording. My copy plays great, clean and quiet with no noticeable surface noise.
