In 2013, this album was the standout of the year. Now, this special 2023 version for its 10-year anniversary is even more impressive!
Gentle but noticeable hiss on the right side, be aware
Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnalds truly shines when crafting frosty soundscapes, and his album FOR NOW I AM WINTER is a prime example of his talent. The lone piano note that repeats throughout "Sudden Throw" sets the stage for the graceful sorrow that unfolds, as chilly electronics and woodwinds gradually join in. The uncluttered piano in "Words of Amber" seems to glide around a sphere of subtle electronic background noise, while the bell tones in "Hands, Be Still" are swayed by the string section before expanding into a sweeping vista, and "Carry Me Anew" is pure minimalist ambiance. But Arnalds is versatile: the lively violins and beats that kick off "Brim" suddenly slow to a halt towards the end, while the deeper beats of "Only the Winds" anchor the lighter melodies. The percussion in "This Place was a Shelter" takes on an industrial edge, starkly contrasting the strings above. Elsewhere, Arnalds' work with vocalist Arnór Dan pushes boundaries, with lyrics that resonate on multiple levels, from the stillness of the title track to the poetic depth of "A Stutter" or the tenderness of "Old Skin." Collaborations with Nils Frahm and Kiasmos also yield remixes of the title track, with Frahm highlighting the piano to the point where you can hear each key press, while Kiasmos takes it to the dancefloor, albeit in their signature dreamy style. More winter albums like this one, please.
My version has some surface hissing, even though it's brand new and unplayed. Given that a lot of the album is filled with very quiet and gentle tracks, trying to listen to it is just plain painful.
