I believe there are two types of this Record Store Day drop. The one I've got appears to be a blend rather than a splatter.
The sound quality of my record is fantastic, it's a flawless pressing straight from the cover.
The cover has a nice glossy finish and the gatefold and inner sleeve artwork is really well done. It also comes with a large poster that's a pleasure to view. Unfortunately, my copy has a fair amount of surface noise and the first record is quite badly warped; I've had to increase the tracking force to prevent it from skipping. On the bright side, the records do look fantastic, particularly when you shine light through them.
This pressing isn't the best. You can still hear how amazing the music is, but there's lots of crackling that gets in the way. The packaging is really nice, though.
To truly grasp Sunn O)))'s power, you'll need top-notch speakers. Their relentless, sub-woofer-shaking, mind-melting death-drones invade every corner of your consciousness with their signature grim guitar riffs, sustained endlessly. It's sparse yet impactful, gorgeous yet excruciatingly intense. The eerie might of the Merzbow team-ups on Bow 1 and Bow 2 is something you've got to witness. You gotta get Masami Akita's ties to the s/m world to get the intended agony delivered through each struck note from the prepped piano amidst the backdrop of abrasive electronics. On Bow 2, the piano goes berserk. Like piano strings were snapped during playing, the sound is unmistakably twisted by Merzbow's mad brilliance. With Sunn O)))'s ceaseless metallic-grinds of guitars intertwined with Merzbow's unstoppable death-electronics, you can't escape the inevitable sense of death, despair, and doom - again and again and again. It's an artistic/oppressive journey waiting to be experienced.
