Seems like the US pressings have a rough run-in on side A. No matter where I place the needle, it skips a few seconds into the opening track. I've got both the coke bottle and white US pressings, and they both have this problem. My turntable's set up right; I don't have this issue with other records. Has anyone else noticed this?
Both sides exhibit some surface noise, with side A being a bit worse. It's definitely a pressing problem. Normally, this would bother me a lot, but the mastering (done by Bob Ludwig! Check him out!) is fantastic. I can only notice the noise in the deadwax and during the quiet lead-in on a few tracks, but it vanishes within seconds. The mastering is truly superb and completely makes up for the pressing's flaws. This is a great example of how proper mastering for vinyl can offset some quality control issues later on. Truthfully, these kinds of issues usually drive me crazy with my setup (an old Technics turntable with a microline stylus, I catch every imperfection), but this one doesn't. As for the music, it's the best kind of pop. Every song could easily fit into any teen movie from 1983 to 1997, if not for it being produced in 2015. Each track is a dramatic mood-lifter, full of energy and creativity.
I'm really digging the sound quality of this record overall, but there's a huge, annoying defect on "Afterglow" over on the B-side. There's this constant popping noise that goes on for about the last 45 seconds (which, by the way, is when the song is at its quietest). It seems like there's some kind of glue or melted vinyl on the surface that won't come off no matter how much I try to clean it. I bought it new on Record Store Day and noticed the issue the very first time I played it. Has anyone else experienced this or is it just me?
The audio quality is absolutely amazing. There's no background noise at all, except for the final track on side 2, which has a bit of a warped sound. Sadly, I managed to put a tiny scratch on it, which can be heard for about 30 seconds at the end of the opening track on side 1. Ah, well.
This one truly sounds way more alive and vibrant compared to the boring and flat original release!
