Earthbound" ain't the top-tier KC live album, that's for sure, with that shaky cassette sound. But hey, it's a piece of history. Fripp himself can't stand it and has tried to scrub it from the band's discography over the years. Don't come for me with pitchforks just 'cause I said that, here's the tea straight from Fripp in various chats and interviews: Fripp's had a long-time beef with "Earthbound," even going as far as to try and "erase" it from existence at one point. But fans clamored for it, so it got a CD re-release and even a fancy 40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition to spruce up the audio. Sure, some critics and fans have warmed up to its raw vibe, but Fripp wasn't having it from the get-go. He's called it "not King Crimson" and even the band's "own bootleg." Fripp's hatred for this live album is no secret, all due to the crummy sound and his less-than-stellar feelings about the band back then. So there you have it. If you're a die-hard Crimson fan, you gotta have this to complete your stash. Give it a spin, but don't say I didn't warn ya about the sound quality. Oh, and the cover's got the wrong lineup, so there's that too.
Great addition for a KC fan like myself... But no 'Top of the class' track. It's improving after '21st Century Schizoid Man', though...
Absolutely awful, and the recording is shockingly poor, I can't imagine why they even put it out.
Wow, this version is amazing, the live sound is fantastic!
At last, I took the plunge and upgraded my turntable significantly, and I must say, this pressing is absolutely perfect. This version of the album is the best I've ever heard, hands down. Every instrument is distinct and clear, the stereo imaging is (honestly) impressive, and the bass guitar and bass drum are finally audible without any harshness. The only slight issue is that the cymbals sound a tad tinny. I'm thrilled with this reissue and would highly recommend it to any fan of this album. I'm even going to dig out my first press to compare. Reviewed on Linn LP12/Ekos/Ortofon Windfeld ti/Ortofon ST-80 SE/Dynavector P-75/Bel Canto eVo2i/Shahinian Arc.
