I ain't rolling in dough (I'm just a regular Joe making a living wage), but I've got a fair number of these. For me, this is the ultimate Bootleg Series release to snag. A couple of minor pops, but no skips, a solid pressing, and an authentic experience that's got it all. It's a fantastic album in its own right, a highly recommended pick. A stellar night captured on vinyl, top-notch job by Optimal. Ain't flawless, but it's darn close and boasts a unique tracklist. To me, some of these performances are the definitive versions. Some pops and crackles on side 2, but still a joy to listen to... Whoops, just finished side 2, those clicks all through "See The Sky About To Rain" are pretty irritating. Close to 4 stars, but I'm sticking with 5 for the rest of it.
Neil really gets the crowd going, encouraging everyone to join in on the sing-alongs. He shares some great tales about the songwriting process and even reveals some lyrics that didn't make the final cut. I must admit, I was genuinely impressed by how much this live recording captivated me.
I rated this vinyl a four out of five, with five being reserved for flawless sounding records... However, after checking out some other reviews online, I was a tad concerned. But, let me tell you, it's not bad at all. Not even close to what I was expecting based on what I read. As for soundboards... I'm a seasoned Grateful Dead taper. I've listened to thousands of bootlegs; soundboards and audience recordings alike. There IS a distinction, but it's not just about quality. There's a different vibe. Personally, I do enjoy a well-recorded audience show. By the way, a great-sounding audience show might not sound as crisp as a soundboard but can be more enjoyable. There's a certain feel that a soundboard doesn't always capture. They can sound more 'alive'. Sure, now we have two more '71 shows to add to the other releases, but I'm not complaining. Nobody's griping about yet another '72 Dead release (maybe some are, but they're mistaken ;) ) Bring on the early Neil acoustic. I won't complain. Only smiles.... I guess my point is... If you're into Neil? If you appreciate his acoustic work, then this vinyl is for you. No question about it. I know it's going to get a lot of playtime on my turntable. I'm over the moon!!!!! As for the pressing. I gave it a good clean with my Degritter before first playing it, as I do with any new purchase. It's a very quiet record. Very happy with the noise level. It has a nice feel to the bass strings, Neil's voice is clear and sounds perfect. I only noticed a couple of pops that I noted and will give it a bit more cleaning attention to see if I can remove them. Bottom line, GET IT!!! You'll be happy....
Awesome audience capture! I got it from the dude who was there taping the gig. He told me all about how they made these boots way back when, so I'm thinkin' mine's a copy that's not too far down the line. It's a must-have for any Neil fan. It's from LA, 2/1/71. Grab this boot, it's a must!
Snagged this one for a steal at $12 on Amazon. A bit of background noise? Totally worth it at that price! Neil's performance is still top-notch, like he's in his absolute prime!
