I was under the impression that I was purchasing a budget reissue of the 1963 album "CHRISTMAS WITH MCGRIFF," but it turns out this is actually a budget reissue of McGriff's 1964 album "CHRISTMASTIME," which has been retitled, seemingly to create some serious mix-ups. But hey, I'm not let down. This is a fantastic record, with only three tracks being well-known standards, and the band swiftly shifts from those familiar holiday tunes into some groovy, soulful jams. Essentially, this is a stellar soul jazz album. According to Doug Payne's detailed McGriff discography, the musicians include McGriff himself (who also plays piano), Thornell Schwartz on guitar, and Jackie Mills on drums. It's one of those rare Christmas albums that I'd happily spin all year long. My copy, despite being a budget pressing, sounds great in its glorious mono format, with no signs of a subpar source or mastering. The vinyl is clean throughout, and I didn't pick up any surface noise. It's one of those rare Christmas albums I'd enjoy listening to no matter the time of year.
