This album sounds fantastic. The vocals can be a tad too high at times, nearly hitting a shrill note. No harsh 's' sounds, but it gets pretty close. I reckon that since it's pressed on two LPs, the music is more spread out, giving a more accurate sound. I've got the original version, which is great, but this one's even better. The bass is punchy, and the mids are spot on. I snagged a sealed copy for just $19. Would've been sweet if it had a gatefold jacket instead of that double-wide single sleeve. If you're unsure, go for it. It's a solid recording.
It's amazing how our preferences can vary. In my view, this is Phil's absolute finest work. It's just so much more mature and emotional compared to some of his earlier pop tunes. I can't find a single weak track on this album, and I concur with the other reviewer - the track listing on the LP is far superior to that on the CD. I caught Phil's concert in Australia in 1990 while he was promoting this album, and I'll never forget the experience of hearing him perform an extended drum solo. I had no clue what was coming (I was just 18 and had no idea about his drumming reputation). The guy is a drumming genius. After the solo, which lasted about 10 minutes, he had to take a seat on the edge of the stage and sing a slow ballad. Oh, and his live vocals are almost indistinguishable from his studio vocals - the guy is that talented. Love your work, Phil. I own both the original Australian pressing and the modern re-release clear vinyl. In my opinion, the original outshines the reissue, even though the reissue is spread over 2 records and the original is pushing 30 minutes per side.
Bass goes lower than the first Atlantic CD release, and no limiting at all.
Overall, not a bad pressing at all. I was bracing for MUCH worse.
Ottima incisione, un disco che soprattutto nel lato A offre circa 30 minuti di musica. Suona ben bilanciato e controllato, senza esagerazioni né nei bassi né negli acuti. Album di Collins STRAORDINARIO!
