Perhaps his final solo record to achieve true worldwide success, "But Seriously" sees Phil Collins joining many of his contemporaries in exploring more political and socially conscious themes. He also responds to frequent critiques of its predecessor, "No Jacket Required," by scaling back the use of pop-friendly synths. While the songwriting isn't as consistent as its predecessor, there are still numerous gems showcasing Collins' knack for crafting relatable tunes. The standout track has to be the powerful "I Wish It Would Rain Down," featuring a stellar guest spot from Eric Clapton and the lush harmonies of a gospel choir. Other highlights include one of his finest ballads, "Do You Remember?", and the massive hit "Another Day In Paradise." Songs like "All Of My Life" and "Find A Way To My Heart" manage to be sincere without veering into schmaltz. However, tracks like "That's Just The Way It Is" and "Father to Son" hint at the more generic, adult contemporary sound he'd embrace later in his career, while "Colours" feels a bit too on-the-nose to justify its experimental approach. It's worth noting that opting for a less commercial production was a wise decision. The punchy, vibrant horn arrangements and drumming enhance tracks like "Hang In Long Enough" and "Something Happened On The Way To Heaven," as does the use of an electric grand piano instead of synths on songs like "Do You Remember?". Collins' vocals are impressively strong throughout, conveying a genuine emotional connection to the lyrics. Overall, the album represents a step up in production compared to its predecessor, but a slight dip in terms of songwriting quality. The weaker tracks aren't particularly bad, just a bit uninspired. However, many other songs possess a timeless quality that surpasses those on "No Jacket Required," with some truly remarkable moments.

Wow, this pressing sounds absolutely incredible! I was a bit worried that squeezing a 55-minute album onto 1 LP might compromise the audio quality, but I couldn't be more wrong. The sound is rich and deep, especially in the lower end, and the highs are crystal clear. I even like this vinyl version better than the CD. The mastering on this record is top-notch!
Top-notch mastering, Phil Collins' finest albums in my opinion
Phil's final great album, before he somewhat strayed off course. Coming out a couple of years post No Jacket Required, it didn't quite hit the same dizzying heights of success as its predecessor, but it's still pretty enjoyable. Sadly, the album was recorded digitally except for the drums and bass, which shows (No Jacket Required was just mixed digitally).
