To truly understand Joe Pass, just listen to the opening track, "Cheek to Cheek", all the way through. His creative approach is all about exploration, constantly finding new ways to express a theme, melody, or motif. His harmonic style was incredibly modern and innovative when Virtuoso('74) was released, though it may not feel as groundbreaking today. Still, his ability to tear through a standard is unmatched. This album is Joe's homage to the music linked with Fred Astaire, featuring works by Gershwin, Kern, Porter, and Berlin. Compared to Virtuoso, this record might lack that initial spark and intensity (remember "Cherokee"?), but it makes up for it in polish. Plus, Joe's studio tone is captured beautifully here, with a rich, full bottom register. As a long-time jazz guitar student, I find Joe's solo and duo albums to be invaluable learning tools. It would take me years to fully grasp and implement the techniques and insights packed into this album. The recording quality is superb, the mastering is excellent, and the pressing is very good too. 4 stars.
