This is an excellent recording that has a lively and dynamic feel. It’s quite characteristic of Rudy Van Gelder’s work, which is truly outstanding. The music is quick and energetic, and it’s expertly performed by John Coltrane on tenor sax, Byrd on trumpet, Garland on piano, Chamber’s on bass, and Arthur Taylor on drums. It’s an amazing band and a fantastic XRCD/album from JVC on prestige.
Six years post-recording, this album features leftover tracks from Coltrane's Prestige sessions. Much like other similar albums, there's a reason these tracks weren't released earlier. It's Coltrane, so it's brilliant in that unique Coltrane way. It's fascinating to listen to him exploring such extended pieces—songs lasting 13 and 18 minutes—so early in his career. But it's essentially a 'blowing session' and far from the best of his 1958 recordings. I wouldn't limit it to "completists only," as it's not bad by any means. But, as the Downbeat reviewer noted back then, Coltrane was still finding his direction.
Wow, this awesome Jazz Album sounds incredible! The stereo image, detail, and separation are all fantastic!
Taped in '58, but not put out till '64, the same group, including Donald Byrd and the Red Garland Trio had earlier recorded as the Red Garland Quintet. The standout track here is "Sweet Sapphire Blues".
Fantastic performance where Coltrane's bandmates really extend themselves to keep up with Coltrane as he dives deep into his 'Sheets of sound'... particularly Red Garland.
