This one BURNS the Tone Poet drop to the ground. Hail Chad!
This is a fantastic pressing, with hardly any surface noise on my copy. The music bursts out of the speakers with great energy. The brass instruments are coming from one channel, but Coltrane's sound seems to be directed towards the piano. The piano is positioned off-center, towards the back. The drums are in the right channel. You can pick up some reverb on certain tracks. Everything is incredibly clean, clear, and detailed. It sounds like a brand new recording. Every instrument sounds just as it should. It's excellent all around. Cartridge: AT150Sa
Amazing pressing: solid, weighty and completely silent. I feel it's a tad too brilliant, particularly on the cymbals, but it's not exactly a drawback. Included was a cardstock inner sleeve commemorating Blue Note Records' anniversary and displaying their releases for that event.
Fantastic! I own a Stereo copy from the 1997 “Top Ten Series” that I really enjoy, but I believe I like the lively sound of this “Tone Poet” Mono version even more.
I gotta side with motown1974 on this one - A sweet smoky blue, like the one on the 1958 cover, would've been top-notch! - That said, the DMM pressing is fantastic - it's sounds AbFab through my 15" DMT Tannoys.
