Really blown away by this vinyl pressing, the mix is clean and crisp, it sounds fantastic on my setup. The only downer is the packaging, just a basic jacket, no gatefold and no billion dollar bill included.
In 2015, I shelled out $40 CAD for a used copy loaded with all the extras. We're talking VG olive green label, inner sleeve, intact dollar bill, punchcards still in place, the whole shebang. It was a hefty investment for me at the time, but after years of hunting for a complete copy, it was a nerve-wracking but worthwhile leap. Among Alice Cooper's early albums, this one's my absolute favorite. It was definitely Dad's top pick too. The PERFECT blend of classic Alice's over-the-top theatrics and hard rock attitude, especially after "School's Out." My copy's a close match to matrix variant #4. Seems like there was a brief initial run using US metalwork, but Don Mills had to cut new lacquers early on, probably 'cause those US stampers gave out. The "1A" marking's crossed out and corrected to "2A," which hints at that. Sound-wise, it's... pretty darn good! I'm not gonna fuss over "audiophile sound" here. The Don Mills mastering engineers did their job: they cut a record that ROCKS. The drums hit hard, Alice's vocals are clear and upfront, and there's enough space to appreciate the original band's grit and distinct rock swagger. I think Dennis Dunaway's bass skills are underrated - if you've got transparent enough speakers, listen to "Unfinished Sweet" and follow the low-end; you'll be headbanging to six minutes of groovy BADASSERY with a killer tone. Sure, it's got a scooped-midrange EQ, and the highs, though boosted, feel a bit rolled off compared to other AC albums. The pitch is also slightly sharp, a common issue with Don Mills lacquers from '73 and '74, so keep that in mind if you're particular about that stuff. But those are minor complaints, really... just nitpicks. It sounds vintage, and most importantly, it's got BALLS. Just ensure your setup's good with bass or has a decent subwoofer, and this'll get you as close as possible to an early '70s Alice concert with his famously chilling and shocking stage antics. "I Love the Dead" is a blast!
