Not usually into hall & oats, to be honest. Many of their big hits, even the ones I kinda connect with, have been overplayed. This was a pleasant find in a boomer's collection I received as a gift. Their most adventurous album and the only one I'm keeping on my shelves instead of selling.
This album is a real mixed bag. The first side is packed with some fantastic tracks, carrying on the blend of Philly soul and rock that started on their last album, "Bigger Than Both Of Us" (funny enough, that title track wasn't on that album but it's here. Weird, right?). "Don't Change" is an especially standout song. But then there's side 2, which is a total disaster; Daryl, inspired by Fripp and Eno at the time, tried his hand at experimenting and the outcome is a chaotic jumble of grungy guitars, never-ending vocal echoes, and uninspired songwriting, ruining what was a pretty good start. It's no surprise this album ended up in every cutout bin across America just a year after it came out; you can still grab sealed copies today for less than a fast food meal. So, fair warning: you're gonna get the bad along with the good here.
