ALBUM *** 3 stars COVER ***** 5 stars ARTWORK by Dennis Nechvatal
definitely my top pick for an album cover, and easily one of my all-time faves. It's a strong 4/5, even with 'Fadeaway Tomorrow' being a bit weak. 'Dying on the Vine' makes up for that skip, and 'Satellite Walk' grew on me too. It starts off weird, but the longer it plays, the better it gets, I reckon.
Black Rose could've been a more fitting title for this album, as it's quite gloomy. Most tracks, either directly or indirectly, appear to tackle love gone awry. Nobody crafts a biting, sarcastic pop tune like Cale, and here he seems to be enduring the ups and downs with the rest of us. I'm genuinely puzzled why this album is so widely criticized. Cale's fans seem as grumpy and stubborn as the man himself. To my ears, 7 out of 9 of these tracks are quintessential Cale and actually remind me a lot of his moody, introspective later work like Black Acetate and Hobosapien. As for the remaining two, Satellite Walk sounds like a deliberate parody of New Wave music in general and a possible jab at one Mr. L. Reed specifically, while Chinese Takeaway might've been better named Chinese Throwaway, as it's little more than a cynical throwaway. Funny enough, those who dislike this album seem to universally point to that song as the only real highlight. It really makes me question if we're listening to the same album.
