In my opinion, this record sounds fantastic, though I'm far from an expert. The mix is what it is, you either like it or you don't. It's quite compressed, particularly on "Supernatural Superserious". As for the music, it's like R.E.M. are back to their old selves. While it's not my top pick from them, it's still really strong. The first half is particularly great.
I'm on the same page as thefixer9 regarding the Jack Knife Lee production matter. Indeed, there are some problems embedded in the masters. I possess the initial pressing (2 LP at 45 rpm). For me, this version is fantastic simply because I only need to flip it once, it's awesome to have continuity that you don't get with the original (where it's double vinyl at 45 rpm and 3 tracks per side). My copy is gorgeous and flat, a really nice pressing. The black and white swirl is stunningly done.
I was a tad concerned after checking out the reviews here, but I must've gotten lucky 'cause I didn't have any issues. It was spotless, no clicks or pops, and it played smoothly. It sounded way better than I expected. The bass has a nice kick to it, and since it's a short album, there's no inner groove mess.
The record sounds fantastic to me. The packaging is amazing, oww.
Absolutely fantastic sounding version of, I believe, a hugely underappreciated R.E.M. record
