Two decades have passed since U2's highly praised album, Achtung Baby, was released, and it still sounds as fresh and timeless as ever. Following the massive success of The Joshua Tree, the band managed to pull off a near-total reinvention of their style and sound. However, this anniversary edition might leave you feeling a bit disappointed. After seeing what's included in the larger, more expensive sets, you might feel a tad cheated. Around this time, U2 spoiled us with a ton of remixes by artists like Apollo 440, Paul Oakenfold, and more, but all these tracks are reserved for the bigger variants, leaving us with a bunch of somewhat forgettable B-sides instead. There are a few remixes on the second disc, but they're not the ones you'd expect, and they're far from the iconic tracks we deserved. Additionally, the remastering job on the album itself seems a bit...off. What should be an expansive, atmospheric sound instead comes across as compressed and a bit too quiet (seriously, I even had a fellow fan send me a digital copy of their deluxe version to ensure it wasn't my speakers, and I experienced the same issue!). Like many of the band's remasters over the years, it seems to be a gamble on whether it'll be any good, which is a shame because many of their works deserve the best quality possible. The album itself is still solid, no complaints there, it just deserved better in this instance.
This is absolutely fantastic, and I don't throw that word around lightly. I vividly recall wearing this out when it first dropped. I owned the CD way back when. Lately, I've been getting into vinyl, and this record sounds incredible. I'd even go as far as to say it's better than the original CD. It might be my improved taste in music or my setup, but this album is powerful yet subtle. The packaging is also top-notch, exactly how all vinyl should be presented and sounding so crisp. It gives me chills on more than just one track.
Fantastic sounding record on blood red & dark blue vinyl, housed in a gorgeous sleeve. I would've preferred any other mystery cover, but overall, I'm more than satisfied with this purchase.
U2 at their absolute peak. - Bloody brilliant album and this remaster is top-notch!
This press is absolutely amazing! I'm thrilled with this release. On my setup, it seems like the volume is slightly higher, which suits this album perfectly. The music practically leaps from the speakers. Just as others have mentioned, the bass is rich and impactful. The instrument separation is excellent across the board. A gatefold would've been a nice touch, but the packaging, liner notes, and lined record sleeves, along with the stock paper sleeves featuring the artwork, are all top-notch. I have nothing but praise for this.
