Product description

"Workin'" is a soulful and dynamic studio album by the legendary organist Shirley Scott, released in 1967 under the Prestige label. This captivating collection of tracks showcases Scott's mastery of the Hammond organ, blending soul jazz, hard bop, and acid jazz into a rich and vibrant tapestry of sound. The album features a stellar lineup, with Shirley Scott on organ, George Duvivier on bass, and Arthur Edgehill on drums, all recorded at the iconic Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, NJ.

The album opens with "Miles' Theme - Remastered 1993," setting the stage for a journey through a variety of moods and tempos. From the hauntingly beautiful "Autumn Leaves" to the upbeat and energetic "Stompin' At The Savoy," Scott's virtuosity and versatility shine through. The track "Slaughter On 10th Avenue" is a standout, showcasing Scott's ability to blend jazz with a touch of drama and intensity. The album also includes a rendition of the traditional spiritual "Down By The Riverside," adding a touch of gospel-inspired soul to the mix.

  • 1967 Album's Hidden Gems

    5 out of 5 stars
    NnQupooAugust 28, 2024United Kingdom🇬🇧

This album, put out in 1967, includes tracks from sessions that took place in May 1958 (tracks 1 & 4 on side one), April 1960 (tracks 2 & 3 on side one), and March 1961 (all of side two). My version has a "PREVIEW ONLY" promo stamp at the top of the back cover, which aligns with this description. Interestingly, every track is in stereo, even though it's not labeled as such. The inner groove details also match this account, and the PRST likely stands for "PRestige STereo," making me wonder if this was ever released in mono. The sound quality is impressive, another warm and intimate recording from the Van Gelder Studio. My copy plays back smoothly, with some faint surface noise and a few ticks near the end of "Chapped Chops.

This album, which hit the shelves in 1967, features tracks from sessions held in May 1958 (songs 1 & 4 on side one), April 1960 (songs 2 & 3 on side one), and March 1961 (all of side two). My copy has a "PREVIEW ONLY" promo stamp on the back cover's top. It aligns with this description, but every track is in stereo, even though there's no stereo labeling. The inner groove details also match this account, and the PRST likely stands for "PRestige STereo", making me wonder if this was ever released in mono. This pressing sounds fantastic, another warm, personal recording from the Van Gelder Studio. My copy plays smoothly, with some faint surface noise here and there, and a few ticks towards the end of "Chapped Chops".
