  • Shirley Scott's Must-Have Debut

    5 out of 5 stars
    kdavjwNovember 24, 2024United Kingdom🇬🇧

This album is a real gem that simmers nicely without the flashy fireworks you find in some hammond organ tunes… it's a fantastic, up-close small group vibe. No wonder Shirley Scott said it's the album she always wanted to create, her own way. Beautiful, rich sound even if the vinyl could've been a tad cleaner from the factory (some smudges & dust on my copy). Awesome liner notes by Maxine Gordon & the textured obi strip is a sweet extra. Thanks Gilles for putting this out. Couldn't have chosen a better album for my first dive into Shirley’s music. A must-have.

Amazing performance, superb quality. A must-have for sure, snatch it up before it's gone...

  • Jazz Masterpiece Must-Hear

    5 out of 5 stars
    gubdalibJune 13, 2024United States🇺🇸

Listen up, folks, this album's a must-hear (stream it, grab a CD, doesn't matter how). There's a unique, gentle beauty here that's truly remarkable. It stops me dead in my tracks every single time. You can hear the sheer freedom in their performance, yet the album is so approachable, melodic, and uncluttered. Scott, Vick, and Higgins are utterly in sync, playing as one cohesive unit, and every note tells a story. It's the kind of album only three legendary masters with decades of experience under their belts by '74 could create. I've listened to countless jazz records, and this one's definitely in my personal top 20 favorites. It came to my attention through a Wax Poetics article, but it seems to fly under the radar more often than not, which is a shame in my book.

About Shirley Scott

Shirley Scott, affectionately known as the "Queen of the Organ," was a pioneering American jazz organist whose music seamlessly blended bebop, blues, and gospel elements. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Scott's career spanned over four decades, during which she became one of the most appealing representatives of the Hammond B-3 organ. Her soulful and melodic playing style helped define the sound of small-group soul-jazz, earning her a dedicated following. Scott's discography is a treasure trove of powerful original blues and captivating renditions of jazz standards, particularly her releases from the 1960s. Her influence on the jazz world is undeniable, and her music continues to inspire and uplift fans worldwide.
