  • Acquired Taste Masterpiece

    5 out of 5 stars
    qsikohoeqagqeOctober 7, 2025United Kingdom🇬🇧

I can't exactly say this is my all-time favorite album, but it's definitely a strong contender for that title. However, I wouldn't suggest this album to just anyone. Here's why: the Ozrics are quite an acquired taste. Many people are turned off by either the Joe Satriani-like guitar solos or the overall crusty vibe. But I was already a big Ozrics fan when I bought this CD, and I actually hated it for several months! It took over a year for me to consider it a masterpiece. This album is incredibly challenging. The initial groove of "Coily" is almost impossible to grasp, setting the tone for the rest of the album. It effortlessly whirls through countless obscure time signatures, shifting keys, modes, moods, and tempos at a breathtaking pace. The complexity is reminiscent of Mahavishnu Orchestra—this is advanced, demanding music, far from "easy listening." The beauty is that, after many, many listens, the challenge becomes rewarding. Like climbing a mountain, the difficulty of the journey enhances the satisfaction of reaching the top. Throughout, the album delivers astonishing details, twists, tricks, and surprises. It's perhaps a "by musicians for musicians" kind of thing—those who appreciate technically impressive musicianship and next-level sophistication in songwriting and arrangement will find plenty to admire here. The standout track is "Spiralmind," a veritable mini-symphony, not just because of its 11-minute length. As a bonus, the production is outstanding—a far cry from the early demo-feel cassettes. All the instruments are recorded crisply, the beats are sharp and fat, the effects and atmospherics are spacious and immersive, and the synths and arpeggios deliver the "waterfalls" of the title in stunning fashion. So, yes, strongly recommended. But if you're new to the Ozrics, I suspect this might be a tough introduction. I think coming to this album chronologically, after hearing their slightly simpler, more groove-oriented works like "Strangeitude," sets the listener up to fully engage with this unapologetically complicated album on its own terms.

The recording and pressing quality is top-notch. These records sound absolutely gorgeous. I'm a bit unsure about colored vinyl since some can be hit or miss, but these are truly exceptional and sound amazing!

I hesitated a bit at shelling out £110 for this back then...but I'm certainly glad I did, especially since the cheapest price for a copy these days is hovering around £300. Absolutely brilliant album, top-notch from beginning to end.

  • Love the Sound, Must Grab

Absolutely adore it, the sound is fantastic. You gotta grab this if you're into this band.

About Ozric Tentacles

Ozric Tentacles, hailing from Somerset, England, are a pioneering instrumental rock band that have been weaving their sonic tapestry since 1983. Born from the counterculture of the Stonehenge Free Festival, their music is a kaleidoscopic blend of psychedelic rock, progressive rock, space rock, and a myriad of other genres, creating a unique sound that transcends conventional boundaries. With over 30 albums released and a million copies sold worldwide, Ozric Tentacles have never been confined by major labels, instead forging their own path through handmade cassette releases and a dedicated fan club. Fronted by the ever-present guitarist Ed Wynne, the band has been a cornerstone of the UK festival scene, particularly at Glastonbury, and their influence can still be felt today. Their discography, from "Erpland" to "Spirals in Hyperspace," is a journey through soundscapes that are as vast and varied as the cosmos itself.
