Product description

Dive into the soothing sounds of Pat Metheny's "Watercolors," a captivating jazz fusion album that showcases the guitarist's exceptional talent and innovative spirit. Released in May 1977 under the prestigious ECM Records label, this album is a testament to Metheny's early genius, marking his second solo release and the inaugural recording of the Pat Metheny Group. Recorded in February 1977 at Talent Studios in Oslo, Norway, "Watercolors" features a collection of eight tracks that explore the theme of water, each piece flowing seamlessly into the next.

The album opens with the title track "Watercolors," setting the tone with its delicate, atmospheric sounds. "Icefire" and "Oasis" follow, each offering a unique blend of jazz and fusion elements that highlight Metheny's versatility. "Lakes" and "River Quay" continue the water theme, providing a serene and reflective listening experience. The album's suite, comprising "I. Florida Greeting Song" and "II. Legend Of The Fountain," adds a touch of narrative depth, while "Sea Song" brings the collection to a close with its evocative melodies.

"Watercolors" features a stellar lineup of musicians, including Pat Metheny on guitar, Lyle Mays on keyboards, Eberhard Weber on bass, and Danny Gottlieb on drums. Their collective talent shines through in every track, creating a rich and immersive sonic landscape. With a duration of just over 41 minutes, this album is a perfect introduction to Pat Metheny's early work and a delightful addition to any jazz fusion enthusiast's collection.

This is a 1984 Reissue released as a LP.

  • Pat Metheny's Transitional Masterpiece

    4 out of 5 stars
    tetuKS_June 10, 2025United StatesπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Released in '77, this is Pat's sequel to Bright Size Life, introducing Lyle Mays and Danny Gottlieb, who would later become key members of PMG. Pat carries on with his atmospheric, introspective compositions, characteristic of the ECM label during that era. Tracks like "Icefire", "Oasis", and "Legend of the Fountain" could very well be Ralph Towner's work. Yet, there are also some brighter, more refined pieces such as "Lakes" and "Watercolors". His use of triadic harmony here and on the previous album is quite a shift from the traditional bop, blues, and funk styles of his peers. Consider Burton and Abercrombie. There's a bit of experimentation and risk-taking, but not to the same extent as the BSL trio. Weber was an excellent choice to follow Jaco on this record, delivering a beautiful solo on "Sea Song". The recording is exceptionally clean with a warm analog sound. This pressing is fantastic. In Pat's extensive catalog, this album isn't at the very top, but it's still a remarkable glimpse into an important transitional phase for him. 3.5 stars.

  • Metheny's Masterful Watercolors

    5 out of 5 stars
    SnrYuhgipLeezabz8December 3, 2024United KingdomπŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

Bright Size Life gets all the praise, but any Pat Metheny enthusiast knows that most of his work, particularly his earlier classics, are light-years ahead of anyone else in this field. When you listen to many of his pieces, and your eyes well up, you know that this is something extraordinary! Watercolors is phenomenal!

  • Flawless 24-bit Remaster

    5 out of 5 stars
    zujcam_woykijAugust 1, 2024United StatesπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

This 24-bit 96-kHz remastered version, released 43 (!) years post its initial launch, is absolutely fantastic. The sound quality, with its crispness, range, and balance, is flawless. It's simply perfect, I can't spot a single issue.

  • Underwater Vibes Shine

    4 out of 5 stars
    _Uqjbatojoqa_June 15, 2024United StatesπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

This album is fantastic, occasionally predictable, but the production consistently amazes me with its underwater vibe. I can practically picture the sun breaking through the rain above the sea during "Sea Song.
