I grabbed this album on impulse, not knowing anything about Bill Frisell. What a find! The tunes are deeply moving and contemplative, and the sound quality is absolutely top-notch. It's a mystery to me why this gem is so overlooked by the usual jazz and vinyl crowd. That said, Valentine might just be in my top five favorite modern Blue Note records.
Bill and his trio put on a fantastic performance...perfectly timed and the lp lacquer by Kevin Gray is top-notch! You gotta grab this one!
This album hasn't gotten the attention it deserves, in my opinion. While the Tone Poets series often steals the spotlight, this one truly shines. It's got that high-quality audiophile sound, no doubt about it. I'm not sure what recording technique was used, but the drums are crisp, the guitar takes center stage, and the bass keeps the groove going. It's surprising that there are only a couple of reviews and not more praise for it. If you're just finding out about this album, do yourself a favor and grab a copy – you'll be glad you did.
This album is absolutely phenomenal, both in its music and sound quality. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone.
