Midway through his career ('78), McCoy Tyner presents this album with an octet. It features full arrangements, including a trio of horns handling the main themes, plus drums and some latin percussion thrown in. The opening track, "Nubia", packs a big band wallop and showcases a fiery trumpet solo by Hubbard. Hubie really shines on his composition, "Shades of Light", navigating some Coltrane-esque chord changes. DeJohnette's drumming is an excellent pick - he's got Elvin's intensity and Tony's finesse. Clark's acoustic bass playing is both precise and forceful. Hubbard's deep, rich flugelhorn tone on "Ballad For Aisha" is absolutely stunning. The recording quality is superb and the mix is very well done. It's a solid pressing with a gatefold that includes some cool session photos inside. 3.5 stars. Worth checking out.
Amazing album, incredible sound, top-notch production, and outstanding playing from start to finish. It's a post-bop masterpiece that not enough folks are aware of.
This album is so under-rated, there's so many jazz legends on it, it's incredable.
Yet another fantastic release from Milestone, their usual top-notch quality shines through. This McCoy Tyner album is one you'll find yourself playing repeatedly, always craving more. It's packed with some truly exceptional tracks.
This album is so underrated, it's crazy to have so many jazz legends all in one place.
