Product description

Beirut's "The Rip Tide" is a captivating journey through the band's unique blend of chamber pop, baroque pop, and indie folk, released on August 30, 2011, via Pompeii Records. Clocking in at just over 33 minutes, this concise yet impactful album is the third studio effort from the American indie folk band led by Zach Condon. With nine carefully crafted tracks, "The Rip Tide" showcases Beirut's signature sound, characterized by lush strings, intricate arrangements, and Condon's distinctive vocals.

The album opens with "A Candle's Fire," setting the tone for the enchanting journey that follows. Standout tracks like "Santa Fe" and "Payne's Bay" highlight the band's knack for creating atmospheric, evocative soundscapes that transport the listener to distant lands. The title track, "The Rip Tide," is a mostly instrumental piece that exemplifies Beirut's baroque-style chamber-pop, featuring intricate layers of strings and percussion. Other notable songs include "East Harlem," "Goshen," "Vagabond," "The Peacock," and "Port of Call," each offering a unique perspective within the album's cohesive narrative.

"The Rip Tide" debuted at No. 88 on the Billboard 200 and peaked at No. 80 a month later, further solidifying Beirut's place in the indie folk scene. The album has received mostly positive reviews, with critics praising its intimate scale and the band's continued growth. Despite its shorter length, "The Rip Tide" is a testament to Beirut's artistry and their ability to create immersive, captivating music that resonates with fans and critics alike.

This is a 2019 Reissue released as a LP.

  • US vs EU Golden Cuts

    4 out of 5 stars
    ToinHGOctober 29, 2025United States🇺🇸

At last, I can compare the EU and US cuts at an affordable price, as these reissues employ the same metalwork as the original US version. It's worth mentioning first how strikingly alike they are, and that any preference for one could just as easily be seen as a plus for the other. Both use a similar frequency spectrum, with the US Golden perhaps having a touch more bass. The US version's strength lies in its soundstage, with a bit more presence on drums and vocals in the title track, though the difference is subtle. A potential downside from this is the slight increase in sibilance in the US version. It wasn't too distracting for me, but I can see how those with thicker styli might notice this difference more. Additionally, the separation on inner tracks might slightly favor the Golden cut, making it a tad harder to distinguish performances on the EU release. This comparison is tough to make, with similarities so pronounced that you question your notes and need multiple listens, which can become tedious. So, don't bother tracking down both if you're happy with one. Both pressings are very quiet, but having a brand new copy, which I believe sounds better overall, makes me lean towards the US. I just wish the reissues had a cloth cover too. Ultimately, I don't think either version fully captures the music's potential and hope these albums get an audiophile treatment someday. Picked up a second-hand copy, noticed a bit of skipping and popping here and there. Surprisingly, it's still top-notch compared to some of the recent versions out there, haha.

  • EU vs US Cut Comparison

    4 out of 5 stars
    XoeyPPApril 4, 2025United States🇺🇸

At last, I've managed to conduct my EU versus US cut comparison at an affordable price, as these reissues utilize the identical metalwork as the original US version. It's important to highlight how strikingly alike they are, and any preference for one could arguably be seen as a positive for the other. Both versions share a similar frequency spectrum, with the US Golden perhaps boasting a touch more bass. The standout advantage of the US cut is its soundstage, as I detected more presence in the drums and vocals on the title track, though the difference is subtle at best. A potential drawback stemming from this could be the slight increase in sibilance in the US version. It wasn't particularly bothersome to me, but I can see how those with thicker styli might notice this discrepancy more between the two versions. Additionally, the separation on the inner tracks might lean slightly in favor of the Golden cut, making it a bit harder to distinguish performances on the EU release. This comparison is particularly challenging, as the similarities are so pronounced that you question your notes and have to force multiple listens, which can become tedious. So, bear this in mind and don't bother tracking down both if you're satisfied with one already. Both pressings are very quietly pressed, but having a brand new copy, which I believe sounds somewhat better overall, makes me lean towards the US. I just wish the reissues came with a cloth cover as well. Ultimately, I don't believe either version fully captures the potential of the music, and I hope these albums receive an audiophile treatment someday.
