Product description

Dive into the vibrant world of hard bop and bebop with Johnny Griffin's "The Jazz Collection Vol. 2," a sprawling compilation released in 2014 under Marmot Music. Spanning an impressive 4 hours and 35 minutes, this double-disc set is a treasure trove of 50 tracks that showcase Griffin's mastery and the infectious energy of his performances.

Johnny Griffin, a stalwart of the hard bop genre, delivers a dynamic range of tracks, from upbeat numbers like "Party Time - Live" and "Good Bait - Live" to soulful ballads such as "Gloomy Sunday" and "God Bless the Child." The album is a testament to Griffin's versatility, blending classic jazz standards with his own compositions, creating a rich tapestry of sound that highlights his virtuosic saxophone playing and his knack for engaging storytelling through music.

Fans of Griffin's work will appreciate the inclusion of live tracks that capture the raw energy and spontaneity of his performances, such as "There Will Never Be Another You - Live" and "Toe Tappin' - Live." The album also features lesser-known gems like "25 1/2 Daze" and "Ow!" that add depth and variety to the collection.

Whether you're in the mood for the lively "The Kerry Dancers" or the hauntingly beautiful "Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair," this album has something to offer every jazz enthusiast. Immerse yourself in the world of Johnny Griffin and experience the timeless appeal of hard bop and bebop.

About Johnny Griffin

Johnny Griffin, affectionately known as "the Little Giant," was a powerhouse of jazz, renowned for his formidable technique and fiery performances. Born in Chicago in 1928, Griffin's career spanned over six decades, beginning in the mid-1940s and continuing until his passing in 2008. A pioneer of hard bop, Griffin's music is characterized by its complexity and harmonic richness, showcasing his remarkable ability to navigate intricate melodies with ease. His discography is vast, featuring notable collaborations with legends like Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis. Griffin's influence extended beyond the United States; after relocating to Europe in the 1960s, he became a beloved figure in the European jazz scene, particularly as a member of the Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland Big Band. Griffin's legacy is celebrated not just for his technical prowess but also for the warmth and blues foundation that underpinned his playing, making him one of the all-time great tenor saxophonists.
