Product description

In 1993, John Surman, the renowned English jazz saxophonist, joined forces with Canadian conductor and composer John Warren to create "The Brass Project," a captivating exploration of free jazz and experimental big band sounds. Recorded at the prestigious Angel Studios in London and mixed at Rainbow Studio in Oslo, this ECM Records release is a testament to Surman's versatility and innovation.

"The Brass Project" is a unique endeavor, featuring Surman on a variety of instruments including soprano, baritone, clarinet, bass clarinet, and piano. The album is a collection of nine original compositions, each offering a distinct musical journey. The opening track, "The Returning Exile," sets the tone with its intricate layers and rich textures, while "Coastline" provides a more introspective moment. The two-part "The New One Two" showcases Surman's compositional prowess and improvisational skills, and "Spacial Motive" offers a dynamic and energetic experience.

The album's standout track, "Mellstock Quire / Tantrum Clangley," is a tour de force of musical storytelling, blending traditional and contemporary elements seamlessly. The final track, "All For A Shadow," brings the album to a thoughtful close, leaving the listener with a sense of completion and satisfaction.

With its unique blend of jazz, classical, and experimental elements, "The Brass Project" is a standout release in John Surman's discography. The album's intricate compositions and masterful performances make it a compelling listen for jazz enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
