Product description

Dive into the enchanting world of Transylvanian Folk Songs, a captivating exploration of traditional Romanian music reimagined through the lens of free jazz. This extraordinary album, released on May 15, 2020, under the Sunnyside label, is the brainchild of the gifted pianist Lucian Ban, who teams up with the renowned violist Mat Maneri and the versatile multi-reedist John Surman. Together, they breathe new life into the field recordings of Béla Bartók, the legendary composer who was deeply inspired by the folk music of Transylvania.

The album spans a rich hour and four minutes, featuring nine tracks that seamlessly blend the raw, earthy tones of traditional folk with the spontaneity and improvisational genius of free jazz. From the haunting melodies of "The Dowry Song" to the lively rhythms of "Transylvanian Dance," each piece is a testament to the trio's virtuosity and their deep respect for the source material. The album's standout tracks, such as "What A Great Night This Is" and "Carol," showcase the group's ability to weave intricate harmonies and rhythms, creating a sound that is both timeless and innovative.

Transylvanian Folk Songs has garnered critical acclaim, earning spots on prestigious lists such as the NPR 2020 Jazz Critics Poll, the Balkan World Music Charts, and New York City Jazz Record's Best of 2020. This album is not just a collection of songs; it's a journey through the rich cultural heritage of Transylvania, as seen through the eyes of three of the most innovative musicians of our time. Whether you're a fan of jazz, folk, or simply great music, this album is sure to captivate and inspire.

About Lucian Ban

Lucian Ban is a captivating Romanian-American jazz pianist and composer, born in 1969 in the heart of Transylvania. His music is a rich tapestry that weaves together European classical traditions, the vibrant folk melodies of his homeland, and the dynamic spirit of modern post-bop jazz. Based in Brooklyn since 1999, Ban's journey began with studies in composition at the Bucharest Music Academy. He founded the group Jazz Unit in 1995, and his collaborations, notably with violist Mat Maneri, have resulted in innovative works like "Transylvanian Dance," a radical reimagining of George Enescu's "Oedipe" opera. Ban's unique blend of influences creates a sound that is both deeply rooted and refreshingly contemporary, making him a standout figure in the jazz world.
