If Herbie Mann ever recorded an album for ECM, it might have sounded a little something like this. Very atmospheric music, the percussion is used for accents, as there really isn't a prominent rhythm or beat to any of the songs on side one. Even the string quartet feels muted and subdued, used to create a mood and subtle textures, and the overall mood is decidedly mellow. "Miss Free Spirit" is the highlight of the album, it takes up most of side two, and it's a stellar showcase for both Roy Ayers and Sonny Sharrock. No complaints about this pressing, it's vivid and full, with a sound that somehow feels lush and sparse at the same time. My copy came from the old vinyl collection at WSGE; the cover is in mediocre shape but the record is mostly free of surface noise, though there are a couple of pops on the first song of side one. This is a really nice album...not what I expected, but I enjoy it.
