Product description

Photek's "Solaris," released in January 2000 under the Science label, is a genre-blending journey that showcases the British artist's versatility and innovation. This sophomore album is a departure from traditional drum and bass, instead offering a rich tapestry of sounds that include jungle, IDM, trip-hop, and breakbeat. With a duration of 55 minutes, "Solaris" comprises 11 tracks that range from the energetic "Terminus" to the atmospheric "Lost Blue Heaven."

The album's unique blend of styles has made it a subject of discussion among fans and critics alike. While some may miss the straightforward drum and bass elements, others appreciate the experimental approach and the downtempo, bass-heavy tracks that Photek is known for. Tracks like "Glamourama" and "Mine To Give" highlight the album's diversity, offering listeners a mix of club-ready beats and introspective soundscapes.

"Solaris" is a testament to Photek's ability to push boundaries and explore new sonic territories. Whether you're a longtime fan of his work or a newcomer to his music, this album offers a compelling listen that reflects the evolving landscape of electronic music at the turn of the millennium.

This 2024 Reissue Repress 2LP set is pressed on 140g vinyl.

  • Photek's House Tracks Disappoint

    3 out of 5 stars

As everyone's been saying, this album just can't hold a candle to 'Modus Operandi' or 'Form & Function'. Photek's house tracks here are a whole new ball game, and honestly, he's not pulling it off. I used to dabble in house before I got into drum n bass, and even then, I'd have thought his house tracks were rubbish! That being said, some tracks might not sound too out there for diehard Photek fans - if you've listened to some of his remixes, you'll probably recognize a lot of the downtempo stuff.

  • Mixed Album Disappointment

This album's issue isn't that it's got more than just drum & bass. I'm into downtempo and house music as well. It's just that the other styles here (apart from the d&b tracks) are pretty rubbish. 'Mine To Give' is a dull house tune and 'Can't Come Down' isn't much better. Many tracks are short and pointless. All in all, it's quite a letdown of an album.

  • House Masterpiece

Mine To Give" is an absolute house masterpiece! Robert Owens' vocals are out of this world!

  • Electronic Masterpiece Pushes Boundaries

    5 out of 5 stars

This album was absolutely breathtaking, truly. To steer clear of that silly drum 'n' bass squabble, I reckon it's a masterpiece start to finish. "Terminus" is unlike anything else out there, those massive, dub-heavy beats are seriously intense, and the breaks layered over the bleepy melody will mess with your head. Then there are the planes soaring above and all sorts of weird sounds happening. And that's just track one. You've gotta have an open mind to truly grasp it. He's done stuff here that's never been done before, and brought fresh angles to more familiar sounds. And "Infinity", the sole drum 'n' bass track on the album, is a filthy, high-energy banger. I'm all about my drum 'n' bass, but I'd much rather listen to this kind of electronic boundary-pushing than Rupert's usual deep, dark vibes. And he's still dropping d&b as Special Forces, so cut the guy some slack.

  • Photek's Genre-Defying Masterpiece

    5 out of 5 stars

I get why Photek's fans might not be too keen on this album - they were hoping for more drum & bass, more of that 'classic' Photek sound, but it just wasn't what they were after. "Solaris" shows that Photek is far from just a drum & bass producer. It demonstrates his true skill. His house tracks are absolutely incredible, they blow me away every time. And let's not forget "Terminus" and "Junk" - pure genius. In my opinion, "Solaris" is Photek's finest work yet. It's not just a collection of songs on one CD - it's a real ALBUM. The flow is perfect and all the tracks are interconnected. It's fantastic, start to finish.
