About Marty Ehrlich

Marty Ehrlich is a celebrated American multi-instrumentalist and composer, renowned for his mastery of saxophones, clarinets, and flutes. A pivotal figure in the avant-garde and free jazz scenes, Ehrlich has spent over four decades at the heart of New York City's creative improvised music landscape. His career began in St. Louis, Missouri, and he has since become one of the leading composers of his generation, influenced by his tenure in the Julius Hemphill Sextet. With an encyclopedic knowledge of African-American musical culture and European music, Ehrlich brings a rich, diverse perspective to his work. He is also known for his dynamic performances, whether conducting during recording sessions or captivating audiences at prestigious festivals like the Newport Jazz Festival. Currently, he continues to innovate and inspire as part of the Trio Exaltation, alongside bassist John Hébert and drummer Nasheet Waits.
