Product description

Medeski Martin & Wood's 1996 album "Shack-man" is a vibrant journey through the realms of jazz fusion, blending soul-jazz, hip-hop, and post-punk worldbeat into a unique and captivating soundscape. Recorded in a remote, solar-powered plywood shack in Hawaii, the album's title reflects its origins and the organic, sun-infused energy that permeates the tracks. This experimental trio, known for their cerebral approach to music, delivers a dynamic and engaging experience that seamlessly bridges the gap between the '70s soul-jazz they admire and the '90s contemporary sound.

With a runtime of 54 minutes, "Shack-man" features 11 tracks that showcase the band's virtuosity and innovative spirit. From the funky grooves of "Think" and "Dracula" to the ethereal "Strance of the Spirit Red Gator" and the infectious "Jelly Belly," each song offers a distinct flavor while maintaining a cohesive and immersive listening experience. The album's genre-blending nature makes it a standout in the jazz fusion landscape, appealing to fans of both traditional and modern jazz, as well as those who appreciate a creative and eclectic approach to music.

"Shack-man" is a testament to Medeski Martin & Wood's ability to push boundaries and create music that is both intellectually stimulating and deeply enjoyable. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to their work, this album is sure to captivate and inspire, showcasing the trio's unique talent and their enduring influence on the jazz fusion genre.

This LP was released in 2023.

  • Alright, But Thin

    3 out of 5 stars
    sdpila0763July 13, 2025United States🇺🇸

Feels a bit thin, like the tracks are still being worked on, so nothing really stands out, but it's alright

  • Decent Pressing, Great Music

    4 out of 5 stars
    qiztbudaJuly 10, 2025United States🇺🇸

Finally got to check this one out and I must say, I was pretty excited. It's not a terrible pressing, but it is a bit on the soft side. There's a small scuff on the first track of side 2 that causes a few tiny pops, but it's not a big deal. The music itself is a solid 5/5. The pressing is about a 3/5, so overall, I'd give it a 4/5.

  • Volume Boost Reveals Excellence

    4 out of 5 stars
    gyovadfFebruary 15, 2025United States🇺🇸

Simply crank up the volume. Those who are unhappy with the loudness should just turn it up. Both this track and 'Friday Afternoon' require a bit more volume but truly stand out once you do. They're expertly mastered and pressed. If you're a fan of these albums, it's an obvious choice.

  • Quiet Vinyl, Worth It

    5 out of 5 stars
    jdahxhyuxbDecember 9, 2024United States🇺🇸

Sure thing, it's pretty quiet. You've got all this tunes packed onto a single disc, with just two sides to work with. There's no way to crank up the master any louder while keeping all that audio on each side and still maintain the dynamics, you know? It's just a limitation of the format. I guess it should've been a double LP for the best sound quality, but that might've easily made the price jump to $40 or more. Grab yourself a decent stereo system, turn up your preamp, and enjoy only flipping the record over once.

  • Disappointing MMW Reissue

    3 out of 5 stars
    Q-XidsogJune 12, 2024United States🇺🇸

I know this is a lower cut, it is what it is. I did some A/B comparisons with the 90's CD release (matching the levels) and I must say, I'm not blown away or seeing much of an upgrade over the CD version. Truth be told, I think the CD sounds superior. I'm a big fan of MMW's 90's work and I'll support the band when I can, but I feel these re-releases don't do them justice.
