  • Ruby Blue Brilliance

    5 out of 5 stars
    mteanbrafOctober 8, 2025United States🇺🇸

Róisín Murphy steps away from the shadow of Moloko (even though she was the band's standout and her incredible vocals were paired with somewhat silly lyrics) and shines in her own light. With Herbert's jazz-glitch production, her work gains more depth. The result is the album _Ruby Blue_, showcasing both artists at their peak. Herbert's glitchy melodies, like those in the enigmatic and rich "Leaving the City," highlight Murphy's vocals, emphasizing the unique qualities of both artists. The music is wonderfully diverse, from the finger-snapping deep jazz of "Sinking Feeling" to the wild, psychedelic New Orleans vibe of "Night of the Dancing Flame." But Murphy truly excels with three remarkable tracks in a row: first, the sweetly romantic and bright "Through Time," followed by the funky house beat of "Sow Into You," and finally, "Dear Diary" returns to romance, though a bit more subdued and danceable, with her vocal range shifting from vulnerable to powerful. The near-tribal and playful "Rama Lama (Bang Bang)" turns Murphy's vocals into a rhythmic instrument, while the title track takes a wobbly approach to melody. The simple, romantic sadness of "The Closing of the Doors" closes the album with a wistful sigh. Herbert & Murphy = a match made in heaven.

  • Róisín Murphy's Stellar Solo Shine

    5 out of 5 stars

Róisín Murphy steps out from under the shadow of Moloko (even though she was the band's standout, with her incredible vocals paired with less-than-stellar lyrics) and shines in her own right. Teaming up with Herbert, whose jazz-glitch production adds layers to her work, they create _Ruby Blue_, an album that showcases both of their talents beautifully. Herbert's glitchy tunes, like the enigmatic and complex "Leaving the City," put Murphy's vocals front and center, highlighting the unique qualities of both artists. The music is wonderfully diverse, from the snappy deep jazz of "Sinking Feeling" to the wild, psychedelic New Orleans vibe of "Night of the Dancing Flame." But Murphy truly shines with three back-to-back standout tracks: the delightfully romantic and upbeat "Through Time," the funky house groove of "Sow Into You," and the return to romance with the more danceable "Dear Diary," where her vocal range goes from tender to powerful. The near-tribal and playful "Rama Lama (Bang Bang)" turns Murphy's voice into a rhythmic instrument, while the title track takes a wobbly approach to melody. The simple, heartfelt sadness of "The Closing of the Doors" brings the album to a wistful close. Herbert & Murphy—pure magic!

  • Murphy's Disco Jazz Debut

    4 out of 5 stars
    llaknweJune 6, 2024United States🇺🇸

On Murphy's solo debut, she shifts away from the trip-hop sound of Moloko, embracing a disco-infused approach that channels a female Jay Kay vibe. Teaming up with producer Matthew Herbert, she delivers a vibrant jazz compilation brimming with cabaret energy in "The Night Of The Dancing Flame," bossa nova grooves in "Through Time," dramatic ballads in "The Closing Of The Doors," and romantic disco-pop in "Sow Into You." Most of these tracks were originally featured on the three intermittently released "Sequins" twelve-inch EPs. The sole new addition, "Love In The Making," completes this fantastic "Ruby Blue" album.

In Murphy's solo debut, she shifts away from the trip-hop vibe of Moloko, embracing a disco-infused sound that echoes the energy of a female Jay Kay. Teaming up with Matthew Herbert's production prowess, she delivers a vibrant jazz-pop collection, brimming with cabaret flair on "The Night Of The Dancing Flame", bossa nova beats in "Through Time", heartfelt balladry with "The Closing Of The Doors", and rom-pop disco grooves in "Sow Into You". Most of these tracks were originally featured on the intermittently dropped "Sequins" EPs. "Love In The Making" is the sole new addition to this fantastic "Ruby Blue" album.
