Product description

Immerse yourself in the captivating artistry of Régine Crespin with her 1963 classic recital, a timeless collection of operatic arias that showcase her extraordinary vocal prowess and dramatic depth. This album, released under Decca Music Group Ltd., features Régine Crespin in a stunning display of her interpretive skills, performing iconic pieces from the likes of Verdi, Puccini, and Boito.

The album opens with "Tacea la notte!" from Verdi's "Il Trovatore," setting the stage for a journey through some of the most beloved and challenging roles in the operatic repertoire. Crespin's voice, rich and resonant, navigates the intricate melodies and powerful emotions of each aria with remarkable ease and expressiveness. From the heart-wrenching "Morrò, ma prima in grazia" from "Un ballo in maschera" to the tender "Un bel dì vedremo" from "Madama Butterfly," Crespin's performances are nothing short of breathtaking.

Accompanied by the esteemed Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and conducted by Sir Edward Downes, this recital is a testament to Crespin's ability to bring depth and nuance to every character she portrays. The album also includes lesser-known gems like "L'altra notte in fondo al mare" from "Mefistofele," showcasing Crespin's versatility and range.

Recorded in the pristine acoustics of Decca Studios in Paris, this album captures the essence of Crespin's artistry in a way that continues to resonate with audiences today. Whether you're a seasoned opera enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, Régine Crespin's 1963 classic recital is a must-listen, offering a glimpse into the world of one of the most celebrated sopranos of the 20th century.

Régine Crespin, born in Marseilles in 1927, was a French soprano whose illustrious career spanned nearly four decades, from 1950 to 1989. She was the first French prima donna to achieve a truly international reputation following the Second World War, captivating audiences with her powerful and nuanced performances. Crespin's repertoire was vast, encompassing roles from Italian, French, German, and Russian operas across various musical periods. She was particularly renowned for her interpretations of Wagner and Strauss heroines, earning her the nickname 'the French cannon' from British engineers for her immense vocal power.
