Charles Gounod, born in Paris in 1818, was a French composer whose name is synonymous with some of the most beloved works in the operatic repertoire. His most famous opera, "Faust," premiered in 1859 and remains a staple of opera houses worldwide. Gounod's musical journey began under the tutelage of his mother, a skilled pianist, and his father, a painter, who nurtured his early talents. His compositions span a wide range of genres, including twelve operas, a significant body of church music, and numerous songs and instrumental pieces. Among his most enduring works are "Roméo et Juliette," "Ave Maria," and the whimsical "Funeral March of a Marionette."
