Product description

"Rangirua" is a captivating exploration of free jazz and avant-garde sounds, brought to life by the virtuoso Evan Parker and the masterful Richard Nunns. Released in 2001 under Leo Records, this album is a testament to the unique collaboration between Parker's renowned expertise on soprano and tenor saxophones and Nunns' mastery of traditional Māori instruments. The result is a sonic journey that spans 15 tracks over 47 minutes, each piece named after the instruments or materials used in traditional Māori music, such as "Tumutumu Koiwi Upokohue" and "Purerehua Kohatu Pounamu."

Recorded during Evan Parker's tour of New Zealand in October 1999, "Rangirua" is not just an album but a cultural exchange, blending Parker's innovative jazz techniques with Nunns' deep understanding of ancient Taonga instruments. The album's tracks vary in length, offering a dynamic range of compositions that showcase the artists' versatility and creativity. From the intricate melodies of "Koauau Koiwi Kuri" to the haunting tones of "Putorino Rakau Matai," each piece is a testament to the artists' skill and their ability to push the boundaries of their respective genres.

"Rangirua" is a must-listen for fans of free jazz and avant-garde music, offering a unique blend of traditional and modern sounds that is both challenging and rewarding. The album's intricate compositions and masterful performances make it a standout in the discographies of both Evan Parker and Richard Nunns. Whether you're a seasoned jazz enthusiast or a curious newcomer, "Rangirua" promises an unforgettable auditory experience.

About Evan Parker

Evan Parker is a pioneering British saxophonist renowned for his innovative approach to free improvisation. Born in Bristol in 1944, Parker began playing the saxophone at the age of 14 and has since become a seminal figure in the European free music scene. Known for his distinctive sound and fluid development of multiphonic techniques, Parker has consistently pushed the boundaries of what is possible on the tenor and soprano saxophones. His collaborations, notably with the Spontaneous Music Ensemble and a vast array of percussionists and electronic musicians, have solidified his status as one of the most influential and recognizable artists in avant-garde and free jazz. Parker's music is not just about notes; it's about creating a constantly evolving sonic landscape that challenges and engages the listener.
