Product description

Herb Ellis, a master of jazz guitar, delivers a timeless collection of blues-infused tracks in "Nothing But The Blues." Originally released in 1957 and reissued in 1994 by Verve Reissues, this album is a testament to Ellis's virtuosity and his deep connection to the blues genre. Spanning a concise 57 minutes, the album is a blend of cool jazz and bebop, showcasing Ellis's versatility and skill.

The album features twelve tracks, each offering a unique take on the blues. From the up-tempo energy of "Big Red's Boogie Woogie" to the slow, sultry "Soft Winds," Ellis and his band navigate a range of moods and tempos. The tracks are mostly loose and improvisational, with a few arranged heads adding structure. Notable tunes include "Royal Garden Blues," a classic jazz standard, and "Patti Cake," a standout original composition.

Critics have praised "Nothing But The Blues" as one of Herb Ellis's finest works. Nat Hentoff, in the liner notes, calls it Ellis's "best album yet." The album's reissue in 1994 brought this classic collection to a new generation of jazz enthusiasts, ensuring its enduring legacy. Whether you're a longtime fan of Ellis or a newcomer to his music, "Nothing But The Blues" is a captivating journey through the heart of jazz and blues.

This is a 2012 Reissue released as a LP.

  • Herb Ellis' Blues Brilliance

    3 out of 5 stars
    jugoPB_December 28, 2024United States🇺🇸

An early work from Herb Ellis, likely following "Ellis In Wonderland". I'm a huge fan of jazz guitar and grabbed this album simply because it features Herb. I hadn't paid much attention to the other musicians until I gave it a listen and was truly impressed by some of their performances. The supporting cast includes Roy Eldridge on blazing trumpet, Stan Getz delivering some silky, sinewy tenor sax lines, and the veteran bassist Ray Brown laying down some delicious walking bass patterns. Ellis is in fantastic company here. As the title suggests, all the tracks are blues numbers, ranging from up-tempo to medium and slow. There are a few arranged sections, but most of it is kept quite loose. The improvisation is traditional, but spotlessly clean and authentic to the era. This album is nearly identical to the Barney Kessel records from the same time period in almost every aspect. Herb pays tribute to his mentor, Charlie Christian, on "Royal Garden Blues", with some licks inspired by Christian. The recording quality is clear. The pressing is pretty good. No issues here.

About Herb Ellis

Herb Ellis, born Mitchell Herbert Ellis, was a pioneering American jazz guitarist whose career spanned decades, leaving an indelible mark on the genre. Hailing from Farmersville, Texas, Ellis' journey began with the influence of Western swing and jazz, shaping his unique, blues-inflected style. He is perhaps best known for his tenure with the Oscar Peterson Trio from 1953 to 1958, where his nimble improvisations and distinctive swing feel complemented Peterson's prodigious piano playing. Ellis' collaborations extended beyond Peterson, including notable work with Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass, and he was a member of the esteemed Great Guitars ensemble. His compositions, such as "Detour Ahead" and "I Told Ya I Love Ya, Now Get Out," are jazz standards, showcasing his wit and musical prowess. Ellis' iconic use of a 1953 Gibson ES-175 further cemented his legacy, making him a beloved figure among jazz enthusiasts and musicians alike.
