The audio quality is fantastic, with clear separation and zero distortion or hiss. I'm usually a fan of most 70s/80s JDM re-releases.

  • Ellis' Mellow Jazz Delight

    4 out of 5 stars
    rmbuibhiopoJanuary 21, 2024United States🇺🇸

Gently … Yet With That Vibe, recorded way back in October '61, is a delightful and laid-back album by Herb Ellis, featuring Victor Feldman on vibes, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Ronnie Zito on drums. It's an unusual group of musicians, but they gel beautifully with Ellis, creating a smooth, floating swing. I've been asked about Ellis' admiration for Charlie Christian, who he was deeply inspired by. Ellis once said, 'Before finding Charlie Christian, I played fast, then realized speed wasn't everything.' He even thought about quitting the guitar, thankfully, he didn't. While he's not Charlie Christian, Ellis took what he learned and developed his own unique, mellow jazz guitar style. You can also catch hints of Grant Green's influence here. Some might think the music is too light and uninspiring, but I disagree … I mean, who wants a challenge every time they play a record? Sometimes, it's all about the simplicity and the freedom in the playing.

About Herb Ellis

Herb Ellis, born Mitchell Herbert Ellis, was a pioneering American jazz guitarist whose career spanned decades, leaving an indelible mark on the genre. Hailing from Farmersville, Texas, Ellis' journey began with the influence of Western swing and jazz, shaping his unique, blues-inflected style. He is perhaps best known for his tenure with the Oscar Peterson Trio from 1953 to 1958, where his nimble improvisations and distinctive swing feel complemented Peterson's prodigious piano playing. Ellis' collaborations extended beyond Peterson, including notable work with Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass, and he was a member of the esteemed Great Guitars ensemble. His compositions, such as "Detour Ahead" and "I Told Ya I Love Ya, Now Get Out," are jazz standards, showcasing his wit and musical prowess. Ellis' iconic use of a 1953 Gibson ES-175 further cemented his legacy, making him a beloved figure among jazz enthusiasts and musicians alike.
