Product description

Pat Metheny's "New Chautauqua," released in March 1979, is a captivating solo album that showcases the guitarist's extraordinary talent and versatility. This record, his third for the esteemed ECM Records, is a testament to Metheny's ability to blend jazz and jazz fusion seamlessly. Recorded in August 1978, the album features a unique sound achieved by layering tracks of both acoustic and electric guitars, creating a rich and full sonic landscape.

The album opens with the title track, "New Chautauqua," which has become one of Metheny's most celebrated compositions. This euphoric piece sets the tone for the rest of the album, which includes other standout tracks like "Country Poem," "Long Ago Child / Fallen Star," and "Sueño Con Mexico." Each song on "New Chautauqua" offers a different facet of Metheny's musical prowess, from intricate guitar work to melodic storytelling.

With a runtime of just 38 minutes, "New Chautauqua" is a concise yet powerful exploration of Metheny's artistic vision. The album's six tracks are a journey through various moods and textures, all united by Metheny's distinctive guitar style. Whether you're a long-time fan of jazz fusion or a newcomer to Pat Metheny's music, "New Chautauqua" is an essential addition to any collection.

This LP was released in 1989.

  • Metheny's Mediocre Mid-Career

    3 out of 5 stars
    pawaSL_June 14, 2025United States🇺🇸

Among Pat Metheny's vast collection of work, spanning fusion, traditional jazz, Brazilian, and experimental genres, this fourth studio album is somewhat of a skip, in my view. Metheny handles all guitar parts, multitracking the bass (which is rather mediocre) and other stringed instruments. The compositions are decent, and his playing is thoughtful, but after the incredible burst of energy and creativity that was "Pat Metheny Group" [The White Album], this one feels a bit disappointing. That said, if you're a fan of early '70s Ralph Towner, you might really appreciate this. ProTip: The three most gorgeous tracks are on side B, so start there and make your way to side A for a more pleasant listen. 3 stars.
