In my collection, I have just two Roy Orbison records: a double CD compilation of his 1960s hits, and Mystery Girl- his last studio work, cut a few weeks before his untimely demise. This album gained significant popularity, partly due to the timing of his passing, but it's also a strong comeback record in its own right for an artist who struggled to regain his former glory in the two decades post his initial rise. It's quite dramatic and expansive, more than I typically prefer. The production doesn't exactly stand the test of time. However, it captures that signature sound he brought to the Traveling Wilburys, which I'm rather partial to. Most of the album is quite enjoyable, with the title track, "You've Got It", and "Careless Heart" being particular highlights. All in all, a rather solid final album from a pivotal vocalist and artist of the 20th century.
Every music enthusiast should own this album. In my opinion, it's up there with the top ten greatest albums of all time.
Roy Orbison, he was always a fantastic songwriter. Actually, one of the absolute best. He was underrated, I think, mostly because of his look rather than his music. His peak was definitely in the early '60s when he was with Monument Records. After dealing with some tough times and creative blocks, he managed to revive his career in the mid-'80s with some help from friends. The Travelling Wilburys, the "Pretty Woman" soundtrack, all those things really helped him out. So, in this good period, he found his confidence again and put together this fantastic album. Jeff Lynne's production might be a bit too polished, but the songs still shine through. The covers of U2 and Costello are interesting, but they don't outshine his own amazing songs. The pressing and sound quality are really good too.

While not every track is a standout, gems like "You Got It", "The Comedians", "Careless Heart", and the stunning "She's A Mystery To Me" justify its place in my record collection. The sound quality is excellent, warm and full-bodied, one of the finest DMM pressings I've encountered, with Orbison's voice captured exquisitely. My copy is remarkably quiet, almost perfect except for a small skip during "California Blue".
