Save your cash and skip the Kevin Gray reissues. You can easily find this original pressing, and it's an absolute audio delight. It truly has that special something.
Roy Orbison, he was always a fantastic songwriter. Actually, one of the absolute best. He was underappreciated, mostly because of his looks rather than his music. His peak came in the early '60s when he was with Monument Records. After dealing with some familiar struggles and creative blocks for years, he managed to revive his career in the mid-'80s with a bit of help from his pals. The Travelling Wilburys, the "Pretty Woman" soundtrack—those really did him some good. In this brighter period, he regained his confidence and put together this fantastic album. Jeff Lynne's production might be a tad too polished, but the songs still shine through. The interesting covers of U2 and Costello don't overshadow his own brilliant tracks. The pressing and sound quality are really good too.
Great vinyl record! It absolutely sounds so much better on vinyl than on mp3, no doubt about it. These are the kind of albums you wanna sit back and enjoy properly. This was Orbison's final album. So tragic he passed away at just 52!
While not every track is a standout, gems like "You Got It", "The Comedians", "Careless Heart", and the stunning "She's A Mystery To Me" make this album a must-have for my record collection. The sound quality is excellent, warm and full-bodied, one of the best DMM pressings I've encountered, with Orbison's voice captured superbly. My copy is quite quiet, almost perfect except for a small skip on "California Blue".
This album is a masterpiece! The audio quality is outstanding (I grew up with the CD, but this version sounds even more incredible), and you can tell Roy Orbison had a clear vision that the musicians brought to life. Combine that with his distinctive, gentle, and melodious voice, and you're in for a fantastic experience. Play side A, and you'll be eager to flip the disc to enjoy the other side, which is just as brilliant. It's a rare case of an album being absolutely flawless, with every track a masterpiece that can't be improved upon. A special shoutout to "She's a Mystery to Me," penned by Bono, as it's enchanting; it features a guitar-drums combo riff that I could listen to on repeat until the end of time.
