Booming pressing, particularly in the quiet bits, where a buzz can be heard. There's some crackles and snaps scattered around. But man, side B's Kabuki Rock is a real treat. Super smooth and groovy. Ayers kills it on the vibes, and the guitar is just on fire! Definitely worth the cost of entry.
fantastic pressing, sounds crisp, Guinnevere is particularly great. found this gem in an amazing record shop in HK; unforgettable psych-jazz flute vibes.
As many have mentioned, side 2 is where the magic happens. It showcases Herbie's legendary lineup of Vitous, Sharrock, and Carr. Kabuki rock truly rocks! It's reminiscent of those fantastic lost Cambodian rock bands from the '60s, with a touch of Plastic Ono Band. Sonny Sharrock's solo is so thrilling, I can picture him using a knife as a slide.
Just realized there's a "Side A" and a "Side One" on this 2CD set! The "Live at the Whisky Unreleased Masters" revealed Herbie's great sense of humor, so I can picture him doing that. In a way, it's like two different albums – "Side A" is the funky side, and "Side One" is the gnarly Sonny Sharrock side. It's made up of multiple sessions. After owning this disc for a while, I upped my rating to 5 stars. Herbie was really on fire during that 68-71 period. I've seen conflicting info about whether the title track is an outtake from Memphis Underground; the lineup would suggest it is. Kabuki Rock, still my favorite track and still sounds amazing in 2024, is a cover of William S. Fischer's track Vietnam from his Circles album. The original was played at a Punk/Thrash tempo, but I prefer Herbie Mann's cover. Circles is a remarkable album and definitely worth checking out.
