Product description

Margaret Brouwer's "M. Brouwer: Rhapsodies" is a captivating collection of orchestral works that showcases the composer's renowned lyricism, vivid imagery, and profound emotional depth. Released on June 14, 2024, by Naxos, this album is the fourth in the label's American Classics series dedicated to Brouwer's music. Conducted by the esteemed Marin Alsop and performed by the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, the album features five premiere recordings that span 24 years of Brouwer's compositional journey.

The album opens with "The Art of Sailing at Dawn," a piece that sets the tone for the rest of the collection with its evocative and atmospheric orchestration. The centerpiece of the album is the "Rhapsody, Concerto for Orchestra (2021 Version)," a three-movement work that demonstrates Brouwer's mastery of orchestral color and texture. The concerto is followed by "Symphony No. 1 'Lake Voices'," a symphonic work that highlights Brouwer's ability to create rich, immersive soundscapes. The album concludes with "Path at Sunrise," "Masses of Flowers," and "Pluto (Version for Orchestra)," each offering a unique exploration of Brouwer's distinctive musical language.

Throughout the album, Brouwer's exceptional orchestration skills are on full display, with a broad palette of colors and timbres that she combines with remarkable skill. The performances by the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Marin Alsop, are nothing short of outstanding, bringing Brouwer's music to life with precision and passion. With a total duration of 59 minutes, "M. Brouwer: Rhapsodies" is a testament to Margaret Brouwer's enduring contribution to the world of classical music, offering listeners a rich and rewarding listening experience.
