  • OJC Pressing Impresses

    5 out of 5 stars

I recently grabbed a copy of this from Craft since they've restocked it. I must say, for an OJC, this pressing sounds fantastic! It's way better than some of the pricier RSD jazz releases I've gotten lately, particularly when it comes to quality control. There's not a single pop, tick, or any surface noise to be heard. I'd definitely suggest snagging this one while Craft still has it in stock.

For the price, this is a pretty decent copy. My first Grant Green record in this category was the complete opposite, with low volume and lots of noise. The gatefold is a nice touch, with a well-written review and a bit of history. I enjoy reading that kind of stuff while listening to the music... it really adds to the atmosphere )

For the price, this is a rather pleasant copy. My initial experience with Grant Green's in this category was quite the contrary—low volume, lots of noise, you name it. The gatefold is a nice touch, with a well-written review and a bit of history. I enjoy reading these kinds of things while listening... it really sets the mood )

  • Jazz Quartet's Timeless '56 Gem

    3 out of 5 stars

I suppose "modern" might not be the best descriptor for the Modern Jazz Quartet these days, considering this album dropped in '56. That aside, it's a strong record, very much in line with what we've come to expect from them. "Django", the title track, is a standout – a sultry, moody number that swings just right. Then there's Track A2, a showcase for each musician that's a real treat to listen to. All in all, for its time, the sound quality holds up pretty well.

About The Modern Jazz Quartet

The Modern Jazz Quartet, established in 1952, is a legendary jazz ensemble renowned for their sophisticated and immaculately played music. The quartet, originally formed from the rhythm section of Dizzy Gillespie's big band, features the distinctive vibraphone of Milt Jackson, the elegant piano of John Lewis, the steady bass of Percy Heath, and the precise drumming of Connie Kay, who joined after Kenny Clarke. Their sound is a unique blend of classical, cool jazz, blues, and bebop influences, creating a refined and innovative musical experience. The Modern Jazz Quartet is celebrated for their delicate percussion, intricate compositions, and consistently high performance standards, making them a major institution in the world of jazz. Their discography includes timeless pieces like "Django" and "Bags' Groove," which showcase their mastery of both improvisation and composition.
