Product description

The Modern Jazz Quartet's "Fontessa" is a captivating journey through the realms of cool jazz, hard bop, and bebop, showcasing the ensemble's signature blend of classical elegance and jazz spontaneity. Originally released in 1957 and remastered in 2019, this album is a testament to the MJQ's enduring influence and timeless sound.

Comprising twelve tracks, "Fontessa" offers a rich tapestry of compositions that highlight the quartet's virtuosic interplay and harmonic sophistication. From the hauntingly beautiful "Over the Rainbow" to the lively "Bluesology" and the intricate "Milano," each piece is a masterclass in jazz composition and performance. The album's centerpiece, the title track "Fontessa," is an 11-minute exploration of rhythmic complexity and melodic depth, demonstrating the MJQ's ability to push the boundaries of jazz while maintaining accessibility.

Recorded at the legendary Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, "Fontessa" captures the quartet's live energy and studio precision. The remastering process has enhanced the clarity and warmth of the original recording, allowing listeners to appreciate the nuances of the performances. Whether you're a longtime fan of the Modern Jazz Quartet or a newcomer to their music, "Fontessa" is an essential addition to any jazz collection. The album's blend of cool jazz, hard bop, and bebop ensures a listening experience that is both intellectually stimulating and deeply satisfying.

This 2024 Reissue LP is pressed on Yellow vinyl.

  • Percy Heath's Sound Fails

    3 out of 5 stars
    HiguvcoxqSeptember 14, 2025United States🇺🇸

In my version, Percy Heath's sound is barely noticeable. The Modern Jazz Trio doesn't quite hit the mark either.

  • Poor Sound Quality Version

    3 out of 5 stars
    puvjumgitcuMarch 24, 2025United States🇺🇸

The sound quality on this one is not good. You can barely hear the bass and drums. Don't get me wrong, the music is awesome, but I wouldn't suggest this version.

  • Stereo Mix Flaws Modern Jazz Duo

    3 out of 5 stars
    MwJahuoMarch 5, 2025United States🇺🇸

Think of this as The Modern Jazz Duo featuring John Lewis and Milt Jackson...but be warned, this early stereo mix is quite poor, with Heath's bass and Kay's drums barely audible. This pressing does a good job of capturing the flawed mix. My copy has some light surface noise, but it's not too distracting. I can't stress this enough, STICK WITH THE MONO VERSION. The music deserves five stars, but this stereo mix isn't the way to experience it.

  • Stunning New Album Sound

    5 out of 5 stars
    kekefjlnFebruary 27, 2025United States🇺🇸

This release sounds nothing like the Speakers Corner version I owned. It's like hearing a whole new album- absolutely stunning sound

  • Mono Masterpiece with Solid Bass

Awesome sounding record, mixed and mastered in mono with great sound quality & solid bass.
