The packaging and presentation of this record is among the finest I've seen in my collection. I didn't have the trouble that others mentioned about getting duplicate discs. The sound quality on both LPs is fantastic, featuring both well-known tracks and lesser-known treasures from Cole's work. I'd definitely recommend it!
Grabbed this on Record Store Day. All was well until I played the second record. Turns out, sides one and two were the same! My local record shop got me two more copies and swapped it out for me. But guess what? The new one had the same issue! Two identical sides one and two again. I told the shop owner, and he checked the last copy he had – same problem! Is there even a copy out there with actual sides three and four?
The packaging here is absolutely top-notch, Tone Poet level stuff, and it's filled with a wonderful mix of evening and matinee live shows. You've got all the classics in there, plus some hidden treasures from when he was at his absolute best. There are a few slower tunes where it's just his voice and a bit of jazz guitar backing him up. On others, he'll throw in some piano flourishes to his smooth vocals, with barely any other instruments around. I'm really feeling how the simple presentation makes his velvety voice feel so intimate. Then, on the faster tracks, he and the band just take off, with the crowd even joining in on the lyrics. It's everything I wanted and more, and the mastering on these recordings is just fantastic! I love his little chats with the audience, and how he'll just dive into the next song right in the middle of introducing it. It's like being a fly on the wall in a tiny club, watching a true master at work, like it's just another Friday night for him and his small band.
Quite the peculiar scenario we've stumbled upon! My husband and I purchased this special RSD limited edition— we enjoyed sides one and two as soon as we got home, and then later that night attempted to play sides three and four, only to discover we have two copies of the first disc, sides one and two, but are missing sides three and four. With only 2,000 copies pressed in total, the mystery begins— is there someone out there with two copies of the second disc, sides 3 & 4? Or was there a bulk duplication error during pressing? Casting this out into the universe in case someone has two of the one we're missing and fancies a trade— this could be quite the adventure! **On another forum, I did find two others who received two copies of the first LP. Curious to see if anyone ended up with two copies of the second disc.
Absolutely amazing! I'm thrilled with how they spared no expense, designing the cover to look authentic to the recording era, complete with lamination. The pressing quality is outstanding. It's almost perfect!
