Product description

Dive into the captivating world of classical chamber music with Jean-Guihen Queyras' exquisite album, "Kurtág, Kodály & Veress: Sonatas for Cello and Piano." Released on June 7, 2011, under the prestigious Harmonia Mundi label, this album is a testament to Queyras' virtuosity and his deep connection with the compositions of three remarkable Hungarian composers: György Kurtág, Zoltán Kodály, and Sándor Veress.

Spanning a duration of 1 hour and 9 minutes, the album features 14 tracks that showcase a rich tapestry of musical expressions. From the intense and agitated tones of "Jelek II, Op. 5b: I. Agitato" to the serene and expressive "Sonata for Solo Cello, Op. 8: II. Adagio (con grand'espressione)," Queyras and his piano counterpart, Alexandre Tharaud, navigate through a diverse range of emotions and technical demands with finesse and sensitivity.

The album opens with Kurtág's "Jelek II, Op. 5b," a piece that immediately sets the stage for the intricate and thought-provoking journey that lies ahead. Kodály's "Sonata for Solo Cello, Op. 8" follows, showcasing Queyras' exceptional skill in handling the technical complexities of the piece while bringing out its lyrical beauty. Veress's contributions, including the hauntingly beautiful "Árnyak (Presto)" and the introspective "In memoriam Aczél György (Largo, desolato)," add depth and variety to the album.

Queyras' interpretation of these works is not just a performance but a dialogue with the composers, revealing the nuances and subtleties that make each piece unique. His playing is characterized by a deep understanding of the music, a rich tonal palette, and a remarkable ability to convey the emotional depth of each composition.

Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a rewarding listening experience. Jean-Guihen Queyras' mastery of the cello and his insightful interpretations make "Kurtág, Kodály & Veress: Sonatas for Cello and Piano" a standout addition to any music collection.
