Product description

Immerse yourself in the timeless elegance of classical music with Johanna Martzy's captivating album, "Johanna Martzy Plays Mendelssohn & Brahms." Released on March 4, 2014, under the SWRmusic label, this album is a testament to Martzy's virtuosity and her deep connection with the works of Mendelssohn and Brahms.

The album spans a total of 65 minutes, featuring two iconic violin concertos that showcase Martzy's technical brilliance and emotional depth. The first half of the album is dedicated to Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E Minor, Op. 64, with its three distinct movements: the passionate "Allegro molto appassionato," the serene "Andante," and the lively "Allegro molto vivace." Each movement is a masterclass in expression and technique, highlighting Martzy's ability to convey a range of emotions through her playing.

The second half of the album is devoted to Brahms' Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 77. This concerto is known for its rich, lyrical melodies and complex structures, and Martzy navigates these with grace and precision. The "Allegro non troppo" opens with a sense of grandeur, followed by the tender "Adagio," and concluding with the spirited "Allegro giocoso, ma non troppo vivace."

Johanna Martzy's interpretation of these works is both reverent and innovative, offering a fresh perspective on these beloved concertos. Her playing is characterized by a warm, rich tone and a deep understanding of the composers' intentions. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album is sure to delight and inspire.

About Johanna Martzy

Johanna Martzy, the gifted Hungarian violinist, was born on October 26, 1924, in Timișoara, Romania. A prodigy of Jenő Hubay, the renowned head of the Budapest Academy, Martzy's career was marked by extraordinary talent and a brief yet brilliant trajectory. Her performances captivated audiences, and her recordings, such as her interpretations of Bach's Sonatas & Partitas for Solo Violin and Schubert's works for Violin and Piano, remain cherished by classical music enthusiasts. Despite her career being cut short by her untimely death from cancer on August 13, 1979, in Switzerland at the age of 54, Martzy's legacy endures. Her artistry and the depth of her musical expressions continue to inspire, making her a memorable figure in the world of classical music.
